National Geographic Institute Map Library can be an original meeting area : nearly twenty years ago, I discovered Eleonora and Bassenko, both enthusiastic in methodically walking around lands of France thanks to the usual documents of the searching department, before scouting spots themselves. Thousands of France topographical maps at 1:25,000 scale, of geological maps and of ancient paths lay-out were explored, compared, in order to find inspired places, crossings of geography and history. The method was infallible and the genius of the photographer worked. Bassenko's Cdrom composes an extraordinary art photographs database, an album of astonishing landscapes and of spots of life, rising from the past and still remaining authentic. Reading it bears a great moment of emotions.

La cartothèque de l' Institut Géographique National peut devenir un lieu de rencontres originales : il y a près d'une vingtaine d'années, je découvrais Eléonore et Bassenko, un couple enthousiaste, parcourant méthodiquement les pays de France grâce aux usuels de la salle de consultation, avant d'aller en reconnaissance sur le terrain. Plusieurs milliers de cartes de France topographiques au 1:25 000, de cartes géologiques et de schémas de voies antiques furent explorés, confrontés, à la recherche de lieux inspirés, carrefours de la géographie et de l'histoire. La méthode était infaillible et le génie du photographe a opéré; le Cdrom de Bassenko constitue une extraordinaire base de données de photographies d'art, album de paysages étonnants et de lieux de vie surgis du passé et encore restés authentiques. Sa lecture est un grand moment d'émotions.
