Bassenko's Venice is at the same time authentic and metaphysical. His cunning hand knows how to capture unreal instants, mysterious lights, creating feelings of waiting, suspense, and reverie. The beauty of the places, full of history, takes on a new value, there is no human presence to disturb the oneiric silence of squares and unmoving streets. The sense of mystery also rules the pictures of the lagoon: Bassenko captures the fascination of this singular space, neither land nor sea, which was the cradle from which Venice was born and which embraces it still today. I, venetian, feel that Bassenko has fixed in his pictures the essence of our world, whose singularity seems to be vanishing in the modern hubbub but still appears even now to those who are able to see it. It is impossible to forget Bassenko's photographs: they give us back the Venice that we have within us.

La Venezia di Bassenko é insieme autentica e metafisica. La sua mano sapiente sa cogliere attimi irreali, luci misteriose, creando un clima di attesa, di sospensione, di sogno. La bellezza piena di storia dei luoghi si carica di un valore nuovo, non vi é figura umana che turbi il silenzio onirico dei campi e delle calli immote. Il senso di mistero domina anche le immagini della laguna: Bassenko coglie il fascino di questo spazio unico, che non é terra e non é mare, che fu la culla da cui Venezia é nata e che ancor oggi l'abbraccia. Io, veneziano, sento che Bassenko ha saputo fissare nelle sue immagini l'essenza del nostro mondo, la cui specialità sembra perdersi nel frastuono moderno ma che ancor oggi si manifesta a chi la sa vedere. È impossibile dimenticare le fotografie di Bassenko : esse ci restituiscono quella Venezia che portiamo dentro di noi.
