Bassenko's new novel is all of Venetian stuff. Bassenko is a foreigner; and yet he knows Venice as people scarcely do in the world, better than lots of Venetians. He would explore the most remote spots, navigate through the whole lagoon in order to understand the soul of this city, so different from all the others, and he fixed what he saw and felt in pictures full of poetry, using a camera. This time instead he used a pen, which he painted this world with, writing, and with no paintbrush. So pops up the portrait of a Venice that only a few can see, or are able to see: A Venice living on salty water, in the canals of the city and the lagoon, among boats and load-boats, close to fishes, eels, crabs, he who speaks a beautiful venetian, in a way a few people can do. While reading, heart fills up with melancholy and regret, it is as if living in a dream. This is the Venice of many centuries ago, and also the Venice of yesterday, that our elder have not forgotten: Maybe it still exists somewhere, in some small corner. But for how long? Will we be some day a museum bought by the visitors? asks la Zermana at the conclusion of the book: Maybe this day is not so far. In the meanwhile let us enjoy what remains, led by Bassenko's hand and the characters he had the skill to create with so much wisdom and so much love.
